Szókratész a görög filozófia nagy korszakának vezéralakja. Elsősorban a megismerés lehetőségét és feltételeit vizsgálta. Ismerőst, ismeretlent megszólított és mintha maga kérne felvilágosítást, sajátos módon kérdezve igyekezett a dolgok mélyére hatolni. A kérdések és válaszok során fokozatosan derült fény a valamit tudni vélő megkérdezett tudatlanságára, miközben Szókratész magáról azt állította: nem tud semmit, kivéve azt az egyet, hogy semmit sem tud.
