Als Sherlock Holmes an den Tatort eines Kunstdiebstahls geholt wird, hat es zunächst den Anschein, als könnte der entkommene Kunsträuber fliegen. Doch sehr schnell entdeckt der geniale Detektiv eine viel einfachere Lösung für das Rätsel. Überraschenderweise wird der Dieb kurz darauf doch noch von Scotland Yard verhaftet. Kaum im Gefängnis angekommen, entkommt der Mann allerdings erneut - und das auf ausgesprochen unnatürliche Art und Weise. Erneut wird Sherlock Holmes auf den Fall angesetzt. Schon bald kommt ihm ein Verdacht, was der Täter als Nächstes planen könnte - und plötzlich kommt es auf jede Minute an.
