Der reiche Industrielle Jack Harrison wendet sich an Sherlock Holmes, da er um seine Ehe fürchtet. Harrisons Frau droht mit dem Auszug aus dem gemeinsamen Anwesen, da es dort spuken soll. Allabendlich müssen die Harrisons mit ansehen, wie ein geisterhafter Mann seine Frau umbringt. Holmes, übersinnlicher Fälle müde geworden, lehnt zunächst vehement ab. Als Watson jedoch auf seine finanzielle Lage hinweist, gibt der Detektiv nach und macht sich an die Arbeit.
