Androcles, een jonge gladiator, wordt niet goed behandeld door zijn meester en probeert te ontsnappen door een bos in te vluchten. Na een tijdje stopt hij om uit te rusten, maar stuit dan op een woest brullende leeuw. Androcles vreest dat hij zal worden opgegeten, maar het blijkt dat de leeuw brult van de pijn van een doorn in zijn poot.
