Der Hotelportier Peterson findet nach einem Überfall, den er beobachtet hat, zufällig einen Hut und eine Weihnachtsgans, in der sich ein wertvoller Edelstein (der blaue Karfunkel) befindet. Dabei stellt sich heraus, dass dieser vor wenigen Tagen aus dem Hotelzimmer der Gräfin von Morcar gestohlen wurde. Als Anhaltspunkt hat Sherlock Holmes nur den gefundenen Filzhut.
