Eigentlich wollte der gebeutelte schottische Dorfpolizist Hamish Macbeth im charmanten Küstenstädtchen Skag einfach nur Urlaub machen. Doch dann ist das Essen furchtbar, und der Typ im Nebenzimmer nervt ihn so sehr, dass er ihm ordentlich die Meinung geigt. Leider treibt der Kerl wenig später leblos im Fluss, und Hamish ist plötzlich der Hauptverdächtige in einem Mordfall. Statt Urlaub heißt es also: den eigenen Kopf aus der Schlinge ziehen und den Mörder dingfest machen!
