Der Herr der Berge und Fürst der Gnomen, von den Menschen Rübezahl genannt, treibt sein Unwesen mit Wanderern und Bergbauern im Riesengebirge. Doch er kann sich auch als edel und hilfreich erweisen, je nachdem, wie ihn seine Laune und sein Humor lenken. So ist jeder Gang über das Riesengebirge ein riskantes Wagnis, das mancher nicht unbeschadet übersteht. Johann Karl August Musäus (1735-1787) verdanken wir die Niederschrift der Rübezahl-Legenden. Er gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Volksmärchen- und Sagensammler des 18. Jahrhunderts und hat daneben zahlreiche Satiren und Parodien verfasst.
