Auch als frischgebackener Ehemann ist Dr. Watson stets bereit, Sherlock Holmes bei dessen kriminalistischen Reisen zu unterstützen. Ohne Zögern begleitet er ihn nach Herefordshire, wo der Gutsbesitzer Charles McCarthy brutal ermordet wurde. Ein scheinbar simpler Fall, da alle Indizien auf dessen Sohn James deuten.
