1849 startete der damals 22-jährige Flaubert zusammen mit seinem Freund, dem Fotografen Maxime du Camp, in Kairo seine Reise durch Ägypten. Er befährt den Nil, sieht Theben, Keneh und das Rote Meer und erreicht schließlich Alexandria. Der große Literat beließ sein Tagebuch protokollarisch - und doch wird man das Gefühl nicht los, die Reise habe erst gestern stattgefunden.
