Nach dem Tod seines Großonkels Iggie Ephrussi erbt Edmund de Waal eine Sammlung japanischer Miniaturschnitzereien so genannte Netsuke. Auf der Suche nach ihrer Herkunft und jenen Menschen, die sie einst besaßen, begibt er sich auf die Reise nach Paris, Wien, Odessa und Tokio. Dabei lernt er die bewegende Geschichte seiner Vorfahren kennen und erzählt sie. Die Ephrussi gehören im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert zu den einflussreichsten und wohlhabendsten jüdischen Bankiersfamilien. In den Zeiten des aufkeimenden Antisemitismus wird der Familie ihre Herkunft zum Verhängnis. Sowohl Einfluss als auch Reichtum schwinden schnell ein Existenzkampf beginnt.
