Was Annegret zu helfen fand: Fünfundzwanzig Staffeln waren es, die von der Straße zum Haus hinaufführten. Von der fünfundzwanzigsten an ging es in den großen, kühlen Hausöhrn hinein. Links war die Küche, da hatte Annegret eben den Kopf hineingesteckt und hatte Marlene, die große, dicke, gute Marlene, die die Köchin war, in einer dichten Wolke erblickt, schwitzend und schnappend. Sie war am Schmalzauskochen. Das war nichts für Annegret.
