Die Löwenmähne Inhalt: Holmes und Watson machen einige Tage Urlaub an der Küste von Sussex, als dort am Strand unter rätselhaften Umständen ein junger Biologielehrer stirbt. Sein Rücken ist übersäht von Peitschenhieben. Aber wer kann ihm diese Verletzungen zugefügt haben, wenn am Strand keine anderen Fußabdrücke außer seinen eigenen zu finden sind? Auch mit seinem letzten, im Sterben gehauchten Wort "Löwenmähne" weiß niemand etwas anzufangen - bis Sherlock Holmes sich der Sache annimmt.
