Auf den ersten Blick scheinen diese mysteriösen Verbrechen nichts miteinander zu tun zu haben: Ein Krimiautor wird beschuldigt, seinen Nachbarn mit einem Korkenzieher umgebracht zu haben. Doch er leugnet die Tat - und verdächtigt seine Romanfigur. Die Entführerin zweijähriger Zwillinge gibt ihre Forderung bekannt: das Verbot des Handels mit Marderhunden. Viel früher, im Berlin des Jahres 1904, muss Hilfskriminalist Ernst Gennat, Experte für neuartige Verhörtechniken und Stachelbeertorte, den rätselhaften "Franzosenrächer" schnappen, der erste Fall der späteren Polizeilegende. Am Ende steht ein großes Geheimnis, das alles miteinander verbindet.
