Al vroeg in de jaren dertig zag Sybrand Marinus van Haersma Buma de gevaren van het nationaalsocialisme. Toen Hitlers leger in 1940 Nederland binnenviel, was het voor 'Inus' Buma klip en klaar: hij zou de bezetter tegenwerken. Buma was medeoprichter van het Legioen Oud-Frontstrijders en bevriend met verzetsman Pim Boellaard. Hij organiseerde ondergrondse activiteiten en legde een netwerk van onderduikadressen aan. Pionier van het verzet beschrijft het korte leven van een van de weinige Nederlandse burgemeesters die de Duitse overheersers unverfroren recht in de ogen durfde te kijken.
