Kent, zomer 1940. Engeland staat aan het begin van de Tweede Wereldoorlog. De vrouwen uit het dorpje Chilbury komen in opstand. De dominee wil het kerkkoor opheffen omdat alle mannen zijn opgeroepen. De tijd is gekomen om traditionele patronen te doorbreken. Terwijl de oorlog door hun levens davert, proberen vijf zeer verschillende vrouwen en meisjes uit alle macht het thuisfront te inspireren met hun muziek. Dan wordt Chilbury getroffen door een bombardement.
