Johanna wächst im Frankenreich des 9. Jahrhundert auf. Ihr gelingt, was anderen Frauen verwehrt bleibt: Sie erhält eine heilkundliche Ausbildung. Doch sie weiß, dass sie als gelehrte Frau kaum überleben kann. Als Mönch verkleidet, zieht sie erst ins Kloster Fulda, dann nach Rom. Dort steigt sie zum Leibarzt des Papstes auf. Dann geschieht das Unerhörte: Johanna wird zum Papst gewählt. Wenig später erfährt sie, dass sie schwanger ist - von ihrem Schutzherrn Gerold.
