This is a rare story on behalf of Sherlock Holmes, not his biographer Dr. Watson. Holmes says that he left all business and went to rest at his house, which is located in Sussex. On the beach, the detective meets his acquaintance Harold Stackhurst, who was the school principal. Stackhurst reports what awaits Fitzroy McPherson, the school's science teacher. In a few minutes, McPherson appears in the distance and, staggering as if drunk, falls to the ground. Holmes and Stackhurst run to help, but McPherson dies quickly, uttering the words 'lion's mane' before dying. Numerous long crimson wounds appear on his body, as if from blows of a whip. Translated by Mykola Dmytrenko.
