Der junge Dozent Peter Fanshawe sucht den Gutsbesitzer John Richards auf. Dieser hat von dem Hobbyarchäologen Bruno Baxter ein Fernglas hinterlassen bekommen. Etwas scheint es damit auf sich zu haben, doch was es ist, erschließt sich den beiden Herren zunächst nicht. Der Butler Patten, der zuvor für Baxter tätig war, gibt genauere Einblicke, doch diese klingen völlig abstrus und an den Haaren herbeigezogen. Doch dann erlebt Fanshawe es im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes mit eigenen Augen. Kann man durch dieses Fernglas tatsächlich die Toten sehen? Was hat es mit dem Galgenhügel auf sich? Plötzlich geschehen unglaubliche Dinge ...
