De hellebewoners maken per bus een uitstapje naar de hemel, maar niemand van hen wil er blijven. Hemel en hel passen niet bij elkaar, net zomin als goed en kwaad. Tussen beide bestaat een absolute scheiding. Lewis schrijft: 'Ik verzoek mijn lezers te bedenken dat dit verhaal een allegorie is. Het bevat natuurlijk een moraal, maar de in dit boek vertelde gebeurtenissen na de dood zijn de vrucht van mijn verbeelding.'
