Auf Hawaii wütete 1899 die Pest, 1900 in San Francisco. Angst vor einer landesweiten Pandemie macht sich breit. Im Hafen New Yorks, direkt am Hudson, kündigt sich die Ankunft des "Schwarzen Todes" an. Professor Van Dusen glaubt aber nicht so recht daran, er vermutet Blendwerk dahinter.
