Die "Welle" gab es wirklich: Die vorliegende Geschichte basiert auf einem Vorfall an der High School von Palo Alto, 1969, Ron Jones, der "echte" Mr, Ross, sagt in einem Interview mit der Zeitschrift "Scholastic Voice" vom 18,09,1981: "Ich glaube, irgendjemand hätte, gleich als ich mit der Welle begann, aufstehen sollen und sagen: 'Mr, Jones, ich folge Ihnen nicht, ich sage Ihnen, das ist schlecht, was Sie machen,' [,,,] Aber während des ganzen Experiments hat sich niemand dagegen gewehrt, kein Schüler, kein Lehrer, von den Eltern niemand und niemand von den Geistlichen - und das ist es, was mich erschreckt,"
