Insgesamt 154 Sonette schreibt man Shakespeare zu. Kein Werk der Weltliteratur - außer der Bibel - wurde häufiger ins Deutsche übersetzt. Shakespeare besingt in seinen Sonetten das Begehren, die Angst vor dem Altern und die Folgen krankhafter Eifersucht. Er schuf damit eine moderne Form der Liebeslyrik, die bis heute nichts von ihrer metaphorischen Suggestivkraft eingebüßt hat.
