Als die 89-jährige Südtirolerin Edna in einer deutschen Zeitschrift ein Bild ihres Kinderfreundes Jacob entdeckt, macht sie sich auf den Weg über die Alpen, um eine alte Schuld zu begleichen. Vor einem ganzen Leben mussten Edna und Jacob unter härtesten Bedingungen bei schwäbischen Landbesitzern schuften wie bereits Tausende Bergbauernkinder vor ihnen. Der Zweite Weltkrieg riss sie auseinander. Zu Fuß, mit Bus und Zug beginnt Edna eine Reise voller berührender Begegnungen und mit einer langersehnten Versöhnung.
