Adalbert Stifter, geboren 1805 in Oberplan, Böhmen, gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Schriftsteller des Biedermeier. Nach Abbruch mehrerer Studiengänge arbeitete er ab 1830 u. a. als Maler, Schulrat und Landeskonservator in Wien und Linz. Sein literarischer Durchbruch gelang Stifter 1842 mit der Erzählung "Abdias". Trotzdem plagte ihn zeitlebens finanzielle Not. Infolge schwerer Krankheit und Depression beging er 1868 Selbstmord.
