Matthias Beltz schrieb "ich bin nichts. ich hab nichts. aber ich lach mich tot." zunächst als Theaterstück. Für das Hörstück arbeitete er die Parts für Gerd Knebel und sich um. Die schöngeistige, oberlehrerhafte Diktion Eigenbrods brauchte für ein Hörstück unbedingt das lebendige Hessisch, das dem Volk aufs Maul schaut. Ohne die auflockernden Passagen Knebels als Kaspar wäre das Lehrstück wirklich etwas zu anstrengend. Doch der Witzbold und Scherzkeks bringt mit seiner Sprache frischen Wind in den tiefgehenden Dialog und zeigt dem Kunstwichser, wo's lang geht
