Nach jahrelanger Funkstille erhält Dr. Watson den Brief einer gewissen Marjorie Beaumont, die ihn und Holmes dringend um Hilfe ersucht. Angeblich trachtet eine religiöse Gemeinschaft ihrem Onkel nach dem Leben und peinigt ihn mit Drohbriefen. Nachdem eines Nachts eine mysteriöse Gestalt im Haus des Onkels gesehen wird und ebenso spurlos wieder verschwindet, beschließt Holmes, den vermeintlichen Tatort bei Nacht einmal genauer unter die Lupe zu nehmen.
