Der aufgrund seiner mürrischen Art allseits unbeliebte und verhasste Mr. Yarrow wird ertrunken an seinem bevorzugten Angelplatz am Fluss Ling, einem Gezeitenstrom, aufgefunden. Zunächst geht man von einem Unfalltod aus, alsbald deutet aber alles auf Mord hin. Allzu schnell wird ein junger Verdächtiger verhaftet. Und obwohl der Meisterdetektiv diesen für unschuldig hält, findet er zunächst keine Spur zu einem anderen Täter.
